About Vanessa-Mae
Vanessa-Mae is a sensation on the violin, a master of her instrument and real world wide mega star with an estimated sales of 12-13 million record, an unprecedented figure for an instrumentalist. The Sunday Times has ranked Vanessa-Mae as richest entertainer under 30 in the UK with an estimated fortune of £32 million. Of course, being over 30 now, she will not be listed anymore in this category.
To date, Vanessa-Mae has released 10 studio albums. Her real breakthrough to international stardom with worldwide acclaim came in 1995 with the release of her debut pop album 'The Violin Player,' her first on the EMI label. Her first 3 cd's which she recorded at the age of only 12-13, affectionately referred to as the Kiddy albums by her best fans, saw a re-release in 2000 as a 3cd box in special license of the family Nicholson to EMI. Her latest release 'Choreography' in 2004 is Vanessa-Mae's first for Sony Classics. A next album is supposed to be released in 2008. Vanessa-Mae's discography also includes 4 different 'best of' compilations and a special 3cd box holding her first 3 EMI recordings - The Violin Player, The Classical Album 1 and Storm.
Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson was born on October 27, 1978 in Singapore exactly 196 years after the legendary violin virtuoso Niccolo Paganini, as only daughter to father Varaprong Vanakorn and mother Pamela Tan. After the divorce of her parents, she moved to London with her mother and her new stepfather Graham Nicholson, when she was 3-4 years old. Vanessa-Mae picked up the violin when she was just 5 years old, after she had started on the piano, aged 4.
Over the years, Vanessa-Mae toured the world around extensively in sold-out concerts in illustrious venues, receiving standing ovations from enthusiastic audiences, see Tour dates of Vanessa-Mae for a comprehensive lists.
Vanessa-Mae received platinum and gold discs for sales of her albums from all over the world. In 1997, she received the award for 'Best Selling Classical Artist' at the World Music Awards in Monaco in 1997, the 'Top International Artist Of The Year' at the annual Silver Clef Awards, and in Germany the Classical Music Without Frontiers' award.
Also in 1997, Vanessa-Mae was honoured with the invitation to play as only foreign artist at the re-unification ceremony of Hong Kong to China. Exactly at midnight, Vanessa-Mae performed her own composition 'Happy Valley' and in doing so, she became the last foreign artist to play under British reign and the first foreign artist under Chinese reign.
Another memorable event was Vanessa-Mae's performance in Buckingham Palace at the closing dinner of the ASEM 2 conference for 22 heads of state, including the HM Queen Elisabeth II and other members of the Royal Family, a prestigious invitation for which she gladly interrupted her Storm On World Tour.
Vanessa-Mae participated in several promotion campaigns of high profile companies for introduction of new high value commodities, examples being Mitsubishi Lancer (1996), Siemens Mobile Phones (1998), Rover Cars (1999), Rado watches (2000) and Mercedes (2000). Today, she promotes Audi Cars being a fervent adherent and owner herself. Vanessa-Mae's contributions to there campaigns undoubtedly underline her undisputed reputation as high profile celebrity.
